.hack//Roots is set in the virtual reality MMORPG "The World" after its first reboot, now known as The World R:2. New player Haseo initially forms a group to quest with, but they betray him and kill his character on his first day. He's rescued by Ovan, a skilled one-armed player, who introduces him to Shino, a cleric. Their friendship deepens over time, but it's disrupted when Shino is murdered by Tri-Edge, a notorious player whose victims in the game have also experienced mysterious comas in the real world.
